  • vivo kicks off 2022 by bringing over the V23 series to the Philippines. Aside from the unique color-changing back for the Sunshine Gold color option, the V23 boasts a number of improvements over last year's V21. With these improvements (and a higher price tag) is the V23 a mid-range phone that's worth considering?

    Design

Like most phones coming out lately, the V23 also goes for an iPhone-like design with a flat frame and sharp edges. You get a special Fluorite AG class on the Sunshine Gold color option, which gives the V23 the ability to change color as it gets exposed to light. That's a unique design feature we really haven't seen with its competitors. Additionally, the phone uses a matte finish to keep that color-changing back free from fingerprints.

The power button and volume controls are on the right side, while you get a single loudspeaker and USB-C port at the bottom. The V23 does not have a headphone jack, but vivo does include a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter out of the box for you to enjoy your wired cans.

    Display

While the V23 has the same 6.44-inch AMOLED display as its predecessor, the Full HD+, 90hz panel now has 240hz touch sampling rate for improved response with day-to-day use and with gaming. Being an AMOLED panel, the V23 is great for content consumption with apps like Netflix and YouTube thanks to those vibrant colors and deep blacks that give life to the videos you watch on the phone.

Like with previous V-series phones, the V23 comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner that's fast and accurate. vivo is one of the pioneers of in-display fingerprint scanners, and the V23 proves that the brand continues to refine the very tech it has made itself known for.

    Cameras

Like the V21, the V23 has the same triple rear camera setup that consists of a 64-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Despite using the same camera hardware, the V23's main camera does snap generally good photos with a decent amount of detail-this can be partly credited to the newer Dimensity 920 processor it uses. It does tend to overprocess photos at times, and we noticed this when shooting in certain lighting conditions.

    Ultra-wide-angle camera Main camera

The ultra-wide-angle camera, on the other hand, has decent sharpness considering it uses a familiar 8-megapixel sensor. There's a noticeable blur on the edges, but that's pretty much expected given the hardware limitations. The ultra-wide-angle camera has colors that match photos shot using the main camera, which is a plus if you need to use both cameras when shooting.

Main selfie camera Ultra-wide-angle selfie camera

The V-series is known for its performance with selfies, and the V23's new 50-megapixel camera took really great selfies that are detailed and deliver accurate skin tones. It's accompanied by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and while it's not as good as the main selfie shooter, it's a welcome addition for instances when you need to take selfies with a large group. Accompanying both cameras are two LED flashes that act as a soft light to make yourself more flattering with those selfies.

    Internals and Battery Life

The V21's Dimensity 800U is already showing its age at this point, which prompted vivo to equip the V23 with a Dimensity 920 processor instead. Aside from having a more efficient 6nm architecture, the Dimensity 920 supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, along with WiFi 6. It's an improvement over the Dimensity 800U, though the processor is not yet fully optimized, as seen with our benchmark comparisons with the Dimensity 900 and Snapdragon 778G.

We're not dismayed at the figures, as future updates should optimize the new processor to its fullest, and vivo is known for having one of the best software optimizations with FunTouchOS. Given the Dimensity 920's performance, running games like Genshin Impact should be a breeze for the V23 as long as you manage your expectations with graphics settings.

The V23 gets a slightly larger 4200mAh battery, along with a faster 44w wired charging solution. While we got around a little over 12 hours with our battery test, the V23 lasted for around 4 hours when we used it for navigation with both GPS and 4G/5G enabled. with general use, the V23's battery should last you for a day with moderate use. The 44w wired charging solution is quick and efficient: it took us around 30 minutes to top up the battery from 14% to 75%, which is pretty fast.

    Wrap up and Conclusions

Our review of the vivo V23 shows that aside from its unique color-changing back, it has one of the best selfie cameras on a mid-range phone here in the Philippines. However, its steep asking price means that the V23 will be fighting its rivals at a marked disadvantage, especially since the Dimensity 920 has yet to prove itself as a powerful mid-range processor.
